'Wonderful Animals': The Latest

The bones of 'Wonderful Animals' came from an off-the-cuff jam session with Rick Andolina on drums. Years later, Ace, Angst, and Curran picked the piece back up and restructured it into a finished song, only realizing along the way that Rick's voice was buried in the original recording. The result trades Dethbed's usual war-metal edge for hand drums, atmospherics, and an earthiness the band hasn't fully explored until now.

That's Pupa in the thumbnail, as a puppy. She's still around, and she's the reason 'The Pupa' has its name.

Lyrics

Infinite soul revered, if it's such you reveal
Can you help a brother out
Can you help a brother out

Risking it all for this shit
Still playing with the house
This is my home, my whole, my all
Everything is better now

All your ideas sound so wonderful
Happiness is my right (my ride)
Wonderful animals surrounding me

Searching, finding moments at a time
Everything is better now

All your ideas sound so wonderful
Happiness is my right (my ride)
Wonderful animals surrounding me

Out of the ocean and into debris
Out of the forest and into the breeze
Under the flowers, surrounded by bees
Wonderful animals comfort me

Early '80s · Buffalo, NY

The Beginning

"Every great band starts with somebody dumb enough to hand you a microphone. That somebody was Joe Tell, known back then and still today in the scene as Cyco Joe, who as a teenager pulled a young Angst on stage during his cover band's practice sessions and talked him into singing for the first time."

That same era, on Halloween night, October 31, 1986, Angst played his first and only garage show with Tirant Sin, alongside Bob Rusay and a young drummer named Paul Mazurkiewicz, who would go on to play drums in Cannibal Corpse. Angst left right after the set to play a second show that same night with Mylan Sheath, an all-covers band he also played in. From those early Buffalo nights grew The Real Rulers, then RULE!, sharing stages with bands Angst still counts among his favorite influences, and forging a friendship with Kelly Shaefer of Atheist when the band played Buffalo, after Angst showed him some of his own lyrics. The full story, the lineup changes, the people who came and went, and the ones who are still around, lives on the DB925 History page.

A flyer from the same night, October 31, 1986. Angst played the Tirant Sin garage show in Hamburg, with Rich on bass, Bob on guitar, and Paul drumming. The set included covers of Exodus's 'Piranha' and Celtic Frost's 'Dethroned Emperor,' along with other originals and covers. Angst then rushed to Club One on the west side of the city to play a second set with Mylan Sheath, an all-covers set that included Trouble's 'Psalm 9.' Left to right: Chris, Angst, Richie, and Bob.

About Dethbedmusic.com

The story of Dethbed is inseparable from the story of Rick Andolina, known to his bandmates as "Ricky Baby." The nickname was earned after Rick did some carpentry work at Rodney Dangerfield's house and found a $100 bill on the job. He brought it straight down to Rodney, who was so struck by the honesty that he gave Rick the nickname on the spot, delivered in that unmistakable Dangerfield stammer: "Ricky... Ricky Baby." Angst and Rick first crossed paths in 1984 in Buffalo, New York, on a college intramural football team. What started as a friendship on the field became a musical partnership that would define both of their lives.

Pimp Slap the Atmosphere

Looking to escape the cold, Angst and bassist Migwell headed to Florida to start something new, landing on a drummer, Bezl, at a bar in Daytona, and forming Pimp Slap the Atmosphere. Kelly Shaefer of Atheist bookended the whole chapter: the friendship that started back in Buffalo helped open doors in Florida, where members of Cannibal Corpse became regulars at the band's shows and the connections found their way to Scott Burns, a titan of the Tampa recording scene, who recorded Pimp Slap the Atmosphere's seven-song EP at Morrisound Recording. Along the way, Migwell, Bezl, Angst, and Kelly even played together in an off-the-cuff side project called Atrú. When Kelly recruited Migwell to play bass in his next band, Neurotica, whose second album was produced by AC/DC's Brian Johnson and led to a deal with WWE's SmackDown! Records and a spot on Ozzfest, Pimp Slap the Atmosphere came to an end.

The Bay Area

Angst felt it was the right time to step back and find himself, and relocated to California's Bay Area, where he met Nora, his wife of more than 25 years, and the two of them went on to raise their sons, Iggy Paz and Kiko Paz.

Angst first met producer Juan Urteaga nearly 15 years ago while recording the Bleed the Freaks project, introduced by guitarist Mike Matheny. Years later, with Dethbed taking shape, Angst crossed paths with Juan again, this time watching him play a Merkins show at his own longtime corner bar in Dublin, CA, the spot where he'd spent countless Sunday mornings watching Buffalo Bills games. The bar had changed hands a few years earlier, bought by respected guitarist Phil Demmel, who Angst's wife Nora happens to share both a hometown school and a birthday with. Angst mentioned the new project he was working on, and Juan offered to record it. The Buffalo and California writing camps became two monikers under one roof: DETHBED 716 and DETHBED 925, named for the area codes where each lineup does its writing.

There, Angst found people who'd shape everything that came next: guitarist Ace Ybarra, engineer David Hughes of Shine On Studios, and Angst's father-in-law, Jose Gamez Sr., a retired veteran who started building the DETHBED 925 Home Studio around 1999 or 2000, constructing the shell and two feet of insulation by hand. The studio was originally about half its current size. During the September 11th attacks, Johnny Panic was in town working a cable job with Angst and couldn't get back home to his young kids in New York, the first time he'd ever been away from them. To occupy his mind, he helped tear down a wall so the studio could be rebuilt bigger, with Jose finishing the expansion. David wired it and has handled preproduction on nearly everything the band has recorded since. Jose passed away in 2018. Angst remains grateful for his kindness, his generosity, and his support, right up until the day he died. Around 2000, Ace and Angst recorded a one-song demo called Medic, "Doctor," a song that would later find its way onto Define Divine, the album that kicked off a writing partnership between Ace and Angst that's run more than 20 years and continues through every Dethbed song since.

The project started at the DETHBED 925 Home Studio, with preproduction work happening there and at David Hughes's Shine On Studios. David has worked alongside Ace and Angst since the beginning. For that final metal touch, the lineup turned to Juan Urteaga for mastering, whose reputation includes Machine Head's Bloodstone & Diamonds, multiple Testament albums, and Exodus's Goliath (2026). For more than 20 years, David Hughes has brought a signature style to every session, patient, encouraging, and always pushing the band to experiment past the obvious choice. His fingerprints are on nearly everything Dethbed or Medic Sun has ever recorded.

Medic Sun

Just before COVID, Rick moved to the Bay Area of California, and the two old friends reunited for Medic Sun, their first project together since Rick's return. When Rick was diagnosed with terminal cancer, the project became a tribute to his humanity and spirit, and the band changed its name to Dethbed to carry that spirit forward. Medic Sun was, in every real sense, the birth of DETHBED 925, and one of its songs was carried forward into "Buffalo Angst Greatest Hits," the band's eight-song release.

Why Dethbed

Why Dethbed

Music may be the oldest language humans ever had. Long before words, early humans are believed to have made sound by answering the world around them, birdsong, animal calls, the noise of the wild. Some of the oldest instruments ever found are bone flutes, carved tens of thousands of years ago. Angst thinks about that every time he remembers the band house he bought on Trowbridge Street, less than a mile from where Tesla's solar panel plant stands today in Buffalo, the same industry Angst has built his career around for more than twelve years now in California. Back then, it was just a basement, a few guys playing loud, and Angst's dog howling right along beside him. Maybe the dog was just responding to bad pitch. Or maybe it's the same thing that's always been happening, one voice reaching for another, the same thing still happening years later, when Rick was on drums and Adrian was creeping in on guitar during an off-the-cuff session, and a puppy barking through the wall became the song's name, 'The Pupa.' That same earthiness, hand drums, atmospherics, voices answering each other instead of just playing over one another, is what 'Wonderful Animals' finally let the band explore in full.

Nearly every real, lasting friendship in Angst's life has come through music, in a practice room, a recording studio, or on a stage somewhere. Rick Andolina was one of those friendships. So was Mike Morales, a good friend Angst carried as a pallbearer at just eighteen years old. So was Jose Gamez Sr., who built the studio this band still records in. Every one of them is still in the room somehow, in the songs, in the sound, in the reason any of this keeps happening. Each of us is a part of all of us.

Nearly every form of energy on this planet traces back to the sun, even the ground beneath it. Angst spends his working days helping people capture that energy directly, and he's spent the rest of his life writing songs the same way, someone plays a riff, and Angst answers with whatever comes out, no plan, just response. It's the same thing the band did back when it was still called Medic Sun, before Rick's diagnosis gave it a new name. The source hasn't changed. Just what they call it.

Most people only get celebrated once they're gone, all the stories finally told, all at once, too late for them to hear it. A death bed usually marks the end of a story. Dethbed is built to work the other way. The name came to the band while Rick was still here, while there was still more time with him than anyone realized. Jose taught Angst something different, he was a stern protector who trusted Angst to be a good husband to his daughter, and who built this studio as an act of that trust. Angst is only now realizing how little time he's actually spent in the room Jose built for him. That's the irony Angst carries, that celebrating a life often waits until the life is over, when it should have been happening all along. Knowing the bed is coming isn't a reason to wait, it's the reason not to. Every song, every stage, every studio session, is Angst's way of celebrating life now, while he's still here to feel it, not saving it for a service. Celebration of life and love turn out to be the same thing, given while there's still time to feel it land.

Dethbed is looking for standby musicians to play live shows and record with us. We play most Tuesday nights, with occasional weekend dates, and we've been fortunate enough to coordinate a few Jam Night appearances this past year too.
